How You Can Support the Families & Honor the Memories of Tahiry Broom & Sam Nordquist
Yesterday, Blaque/OUT Magazine reported on the violent death of 29 year old Tahiry Broom of Ohio in Michigan and the brutal torturing of 24 year old Sam Nordquist of Minnesota in upstate New York. Their senseless deaths devastated multiple communities, several families and touched the hearts of people around the world. In a time that the LGBTQIA+ community and Trans community specifically are facing hit after hit, the blatant disregard for life of a Trans sibling is beyond devestating.
You often hear of families who have abandoned their Trans family member, even their GOFUNDMEs often misgender them which can be incredibly dehumanizing and painful for the friends and chosen family who knew them in life. To honor who someone is, is to respect who they authentically were both in life and death. In the interviews with both Tahiry and Sam’s family, they stood by their loved ones and used correct pronouns and names through immense heartbreak and grief. There was a vigil for Tahiry on Valentine’s Day and there wilI be one held in Canandaigua on February 17th.
Both family’s have created GOFUNDME’s to raise money for their travel and funeral expenses which will be significant as both will be bringing their children home from another state to lay them to rest. If you are in the position to give, at this moment, Sam’s GOFUNDME has raised $12,764 and Tahiry’s GOFUNDME has only raised $105.
Hi, my name is Kayla. I am Sam Nordquist's sister. On September 28th, 2024, Sam went to New York to meet his online girlfriend. Sam has not been heard from by any of his family or friends since January 1st, 2025. 2025 was the last time his voice was heard. Sam was due to be back in Minnesota by October 12th, 2024. He had a round trip plane ticket.
Me and my mom need to get to New York so we can find Sam and bring him home. We are very low on funds and can't afford to go on our own. If anyone is willing and able to help, please do so. Hello, my name is Patricia Bender (Polo). I am the aunt of Tahiry Broom, who was brutally murdered in Southfield, Michigan. Tahiry is a beloved member of the LGBTQ community who was murdered simply for being who she was! She was brilliant, vibrant, and confident. She loved her friends and family. She was very outgoing and resilient and loved to live life to the fullest. Genuinely one of the sweetest souls you’d ever meet and would give anyone the shirt off her back.Due to circumstances and this unfortunate situation, my sister (Tahiry's mom) and family are raising money for memorial services and other miscellaneous expenses. So we are reaching out in hopes that there's anyone who would like to help put Tahiry away properly. Any donations are more than appreciated.
